Short description

The sector Wood Processing includes emissions of NMVOC, TSP, PM10, and PM2,5 from wood chipboard production.

Wood chipboard is produced in a total of 16 plants in Germany. Some 6,000 employees work in chipboard plants nation-wide. The wood chipboard industry tends to be dominated by larger companies.

Chipboard is produced from wood chips with added binders (resin), in a process that applies heat and pressure. The main source of NMVOC emissions in such productions are the wood chips used, which release NMVOC during drying via heating. NMVOC can also be emitted from wood and binders during the pressing process.

During the manufacturing of chipboard, emissions of wood dust arise from all individual production steps. Main sources for emissions of wood dust are the delivery and storage of wood particles, the drying of the wood chips and the pressing and the following finishing processes like sanding and edge-trimming. The exhaust gas from the chipboard production process is collected and cleaned by secondary measures. In most cases gas cyclones in combination with bag filters or wet separators are used for the exhaust gas purification.

With activity data and emission factors remaining unrevised, no recalculations have been carried out compared to last year's submission.
